U.S. Embassy Well-known U.S. Textile Artist To Visit Iceland

Textile artist James Koehler, who is well-known in the United States and elsewhere for his vibrant tapestries, will visit Iceland from January 20-27, 2007.

During his stay, he will meet with artists and art classes in Reykjavík, Hafnarfjörður and Akureyri.

Mr. Koehler was born in Detroit, Michigan, and completed a BA in Anthropology from the University of Michigan in 1974.

He began weaving in 1977 while living at a Benedictine monastery in northern New Mexico and spent the next 10 years working in the monastery weaving shop, where he learned to weave and dye, learned about the creative process, learned about solitude, and how to focus his energy.  He draws his inspiration from living in the New Mexican wilderness. He now spends 10-12 hours at the loom or in the dye studio each day.

You can see more of his work at his website: www.jameskoehler.com
