Passports

Simple Renewal

Application

If you qualify for simple renewal (i.e., you meet all of the conditions listed before), you must submit the following:

  1. A fully completed DS-82 passport application form. The DS-82 passport application form can also be filled out on-line.
  2. Your most recent passport, which must have been issued within the past 15 years. (If your most recent passport was issued more than 15 years ago, you must follow the procedures for first-time passport applicants.)
  3. Two recent, identical photographs, approximately two-by-two inches (5X5 cm). The pictures must be in color and should show the full frontal view on a light background. The Embassy will reject any photographs that do not meet the specified requirements listed on the application. Vending machine photographs and photographs printed on a home computer are unacceptable;
  4. If you have had your name changed by marriage or court order since issuance of your last passport, bring proper documentation reflecting the name change.

Fee

The fee is $75, payable in cash, money order or with a credit card, U.S. dollars or the Icelandic kronur equivalent. The Embassy does not accept personal checks or debit cards.

Processing Time

Since 8 April 2002, the production of passports has been centralized in the United States (see Consular Information for further background information on this change.) The Embassy is no longer authorized to produce passports, except in narrowly defined emergency cases. All passport applications must be sent to the United States for processing and issuance. The completed passports are then sent to the Embassy for distribution to the applicants. Our goal is to issue a passport within two weeks of application, but depending on the speed of mail delivery and other factors outside of our control, the process could take longer. We therefore suggest that you apply for your passport at least three weeks in advance of your expected travel.

Special Instructions for Mail-in Applications

The fee should be in the form of a U.S.-denominated cashier’s (bank) check.  Do not send cash.  If you do, your application will be returned unprocessed.

Mail your application and the other required in a padded envelope to the American Embassy, Consular Section, Laufasvegi 21, 101 Reykjavik.  Enclose a self-addressed envelope that we can use to send back both your old and new passports.  Please take note that we only return passports to addresses within Iceland.  You should get your new passport within four to six weeks of sending in your application.

Does This Apply to You?

If you feel that these apply to you, bring your application between 13.30 pm and 15.30 pm Monday through Friday, except for Icelandic and American holidays, when the Embassy is closed.  Click here for information on emergency assistance.
