MEDICAL INFORMATION SHEET
General Information
Emergencies/ Urgent Care
In an emergency – unconsciousness, serious bleeding, difficulty breathing – do not spend time trying to contact a doctor. CALL 112 and ask for an ambulance. Each ambulance is staffed with a resident physician and will transport you to the nearest hospital accepting emergencies.
If you are in Reykjavik and have an urgent medical problem you can also go straight to the emergency room at Landspítali Háskólasjúkrahús Hospital located in Fossvogur. It is open 24 hours a day. Telephone 525-1700.
After-Hours Care
If you have a non-emergency medical condition that cannot wait until the next business day, CALL 1770. You will be directed to primary care clinic near your location that offers after-hours care (i.e., which is generally available 5 – 11:30 pm on weekdays and 9am-11pm on weekends).
In the capital city area, there are two after-hours clinics: one at Landspítali Háskólasjúkrahús in Fossvogur and the other at Smaratorg 1 in Kopavogur.
Both are staffed by family physicians. When you call 1770, the nurse who answers will do one of the following: offer advice on how to handle the problem, suggest the patient come to the after-hours clinic to be seen, or send a physician to make a house call.
