Death abroad

Reporting the Death of a U.S. Citizen Abroad.

The death of an American citizen should be reported to the Embassy as soon as possible.  If the Embassy is closed, call 693-9207 to reach the duty officer, who is available 24 hours a day.  If you can't get through to the duty officer, call the Embassy main number at 562-9100 and dial extension 2248.  The Embassy security guard force will take your phone call and put you in contact with someone who can help.

As required, the Embassy will notify the next-of-kin about the death, secure the deceased American's personal effects, and assist with the disposition of the remains.  In all cases, the Embassy prepares a report of death, which is a legal document used to settle the estate and to support insurance and other compensation claims.
