ATTORNEY INFORMATION

One of our most important functions is to help American citizens in distress.  When the Embassy is closed, there is a duty officer available 24 hours a day to render assistance.  The duty officer can be reached directly by calling 693-9207.  If you can’t get through to the duty officer, call the Embassy main number at 562-9100 and dial extension 2248.  The Embassy security guard force will take your phone call and put you in contact with someone who can help. Our mailing address is American Embassy, Consular Section, Laufasvegi 21, 101 Reykjavik.  Our e-mail address is reykjavikconsular@state.gov.

When living abroad, you are subject to local - i.e. foreign laws. If you experience difficulties with the local authorities, remember American officials are limited by foreign laws, U.S. regulations, and geography as to what they can do to assist you. Although consular officers cannot get you out of jail, serve as your attorney or give legal advice, they can provide a list of local attorneys and help you find legal representation.
