U.S. Embassy Facilitates Iceland-Norway Defense Consultations
On 19 December, Lieutenant Colonel Randy Wiers - stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Reykjavik as the representative of the U.S. military’s European Command – provided a visiting Norwegian defense delegation with an introduction to facilities at the former U.S. Naval Air Station at Keflavik. These facilities including hardened aircraft shelters and an alert hangar are being maintained at U.S. Government expense for possible NATO use in exercises or emergencies.
The United States is committed to the defense of Iceland in accordance with the NATO Treaty, the bilateral 1951 Defense Agreement between the U.S. and Iceland, and the October 2006 bilateral Joint Understanding on security cooperation. We welcome the recent discussions between Iceland and other NATO allies on North Atlantic security as complementing – but not substituting for – continued cooperation between the U.S. and Iceland.
