Enthusiastic Crowd Views Live US Election Results


On Election Day, November 7, the American Embassy in Iceland, in cooperation with the University of Iceland’s Institute of International Affairs and Alþjóðasamfélagið-Organization of Graduate Students in International Relations at the university, invited the general public to an election night event at Stúdentakjallarinn on the campus of the University of Iceland to watch coverage of the midterm Congressional elections.

The election coverage was broadcast live on a big screen, and the election, set to be an exciting one, drew a large crowd including university students, journalists, and even a parliamentarian.

the Institute of International Affairs Silja Bára Ómarsdóttir, and Dr. Michael Corgan, a visiting professor at the University of Iceland, spoke before the first results were in with an outline of the positions at stake and commentary on the possible implications of this election.

The audience was very enthusiastic and asked the trio a number of insightful questions. The event also caught the attention of the media, with a short live report from Stúdentakjallarinn and interview with Evans appearing on RUV-TV's evening news broadcast.

The crowd was in excellent spirits and the night was a huge success, demonstrating Icelandic interest in American politics and the common ground between our two democracies.
