A New Chapter in Bilateral Relations Opens

A series of commemorations were held in September to mark the closing of the U.S. Naval Air Station in Keflavik, Iceland.

U.S. Ambassador to Iceland Carol van Voorst spoke of the historic value and the cultural influence of the base. 

The remaining U.S. military personnel departed Iceland September 30.

After six months of talks, the U.S. and Iceland negotiated a package

of agreements providing for the turnover of the base and facilities and a framework to meet the security threats of the 21^st century.

The new agreements build upon the U.S. commitment to defend Iceland under the 1951 Defense Agreement and NATO Charter.
