Embassy Political Officer Wins Two Silver Medals in Iceland Cycling Championship   

U.S. Embassy-Reykjavik Political Officer Brad Evans took home a pair of silver medals from the Icelandic National Road Cycling Championships on August 9 and 13, 2006.  In the time trial event on August 9, riders competed one at a time over a 30-kilometer (18.6-mile) course near Thingvellir National Park.  Evans finished 10th overall and second in the 30-39 age group with a time of 49:54.

On Sunday, August 13, riders assembled in Hvalfjörður for the road race championship, held over three laps of a hilly 30km course for a total of 90km (56 miles).  The field stayed together for the first two laps until the eventual winner (and defending champion) exploded the group with a series of hard accelerations.  Evans pressed on for an eventual eighth place finish, again taking second in the 30-39 age group.

impact in both races of the strong North Atlantic winds.  "These guys have no problem racing against a howling wind," he noted.  "It's pretty impressive."  Evans said he looks forward to riding and racing as much a possible during his assignment in Reykjavik, as "cycling is a great excuse to get out and see a lot of the country."
