Under Secretary Burns Visit to Iceland Underscores More Modern Defense Relationship Between the Two Countries
The June 14 visit to Iceland by Under Secretary Nicholas Burns received overall positive coverage by the country’s leading newspaper, Frettabladid, newspaper websites, the two television channels, and state radio. Frettabladid and Morgunbladid both had front-page stories with photo spreads of the meetings between Under Secretary Burns, Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde and Minister for Foreign Affairs Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir. The newspapers quoted the Under Secretary saying bilateral ties are now “more mature, modern and a more equitable relationship.” Under Secretary Burns reaffirmed that the U.S. will honor the 1951 Defense Agreement, and described Iceland as a trusted ally. The Under Secretary gave an exclusive interview to Kastljós, the most popular television show with up to 50 percent of the viewing public, and one opinion maker said it was one of the best interviews seen on Icelandic TV for a long time.
